Fall Esports Fun and a Playoff Run
Wayland High School’s first fall season for esports wrapped up with a playoff appearance for our Nintendo Smash Brother’s team. The team of Levi Fifelski, Dylan Haley, Jayden Harnish, Aydyn Drake, Connor Bush, and Quilan Sheffer finished with a 5-4 record. The same team members also competed in Nintendo Mario Kart 8 and finished with a winning record, just missing the playoffs. Senior Levi Fifelski served as the team captain and chief technician for match communication and set-up.
Matches were on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school at 4:00 pm, typically finishing up by 5:30 pm. Students also scrimmage schools from across the country before matches. ESports have many advantages over traditional sports. No travel expenses are needed, teams are small, any school can compete, no stadium needed, and very little special equipment is needed. Teams separated by thousands of miles can meet and compete every day. The Michigan High School ESports League Championships were held December 8th at Michigan State University. They have a state of the art arena purposely built for esports.
Wayland High School ESports will start again for the spring season the first week of February, 2025. Students can compete in Mario Kart 8, Smash Brothers, Rocket League, Madden 25, NBA2K25, Chess, and Splatoon 3. Competition nights will vary by game title and most game titles have a set number of participants. The spring season lasts until the first week of May. If interested in competing, please contact Mr. Braginton at [email protected].
