Inclusion Week
In the world of education, you often hear about the importance of inclusion, but what does that mean? Historically, students with disabilities were often overlooked or excluded from traditional classrooms, but since the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) originally enacted in 1990, schools are emphasizing inclusive education, celebrating diverse learning styles and abilities, and fostering an environment where every student can thrive.
During the week of February 24th - 28th, 2025, Wayland Union Schools held their first district-wide Inclusion Week. The goal was to teach students, staff, and community members about inclusive practices for students with disabilities. Each day, students participated in lessons about inclusion/friendship, staff members received an email sharing new ideas about inclusive practices, and community members received education about what inclusion looks like in our community through social media posts.
Wayland Union Schools believes that inclusion isn’t just a policy—it’s a pathway to success for every student! When we integrate special education practices into our classrooms, we’re creating an environment where every learner is celebrated, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Inclusive practices enhance social skills, provide real-world preparation, improve academic outcomes, and build stronger communities.
Our district is proud to be a part of a legacy that continues to evolve, ensuring that every learner is given the opportunity to shine. We truly believe that “all means all,” and we hope that Inclusion Week brought awareness to various disabilities. Let’s continue to work together in creating a supportive, inclusive community where every student is given the opportunity to thrive!
