MERT Drills

Have you ever wondered what happens when a student or staff member experiences a medical emergency?
At Wayland Union Schools, each building is equipped with a trained MERT (Medical Emergency Response Team), ready to respond quickly to any medical situation announced over the PA system or via walkie-talkies. These team members undergo annual training provided by our school nurses and staff who are certified EMTs or Red Cross-trained, ensuring every building is well-prepared to handle emergencies with confidence and care.
To maintain readiness, our core support team conducts unannounced drills twice a year at every building. These drills feature realistic scenarios that challenge MERT members to respond as they would in a true emergency. Following each drill, the team debriefs to review what went well and identify areas for improvement—always striving to enhance response times and communication.

Staff practiced identifying the emergency, contacting parents and emergency responders, reviewing medical records, and administering an EpiPen—all crucial steps in a high-stakes situation. At Wayland Union Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our highest priority. We’re proud to offer these vital training experiences that empower our staff to act quickly, confidently, and effectively when every second counts.
