Freshman Connection
Wayland Union High School’s Peer Assistant Leaders/Listeners (PALs) are proud to announce the continuation of the successful Freshman Connection program for the 2025/26 school year. The Peer Assistant Leaders/Listeners program empowers upperclassmen to serve as mentors and role models for their peers in addition to one on one services as needed. Through leadership, positive peer influence, and community-building activities, PALs help foster a supportive and inclusive school culture.
The Freshman Connection program was first introduced during the 2024/25 school year after teachers attended a PALs professional development session focused on strengthening school culture. From these discussions came the idea to help freshmen feel more comfortable in high school and learn how to access support, connect with the school community, and build a foundation for academic success.
As part of the program, PALs visit freshman classrooms for 10–15 minutes every other week to lead mini-lessons. These lessons share positive messages, encourage engagement, and foster a welcoming school environment.
“I really enjoy being able to work with the freshmen and help them get more comfortable with being in high school,” said PAL member Alaina Lancaster. “It’s nice to watch them come out of their shell as time goes on.”
The program has been well-received by staff and students alike. “This has been such a great way for our freshmen to learn some life lessons from peers and be able to recognize older kids in our school that they can look up to and go to for support,” said Mrs. Foley, one of the participating teachers.
Teachers have also noticed the unique impact PALs bring to the classroom. “The PALs have been so helpful in our freshman classes,” said Mr. Bakker. “There are plenty of times where the freshmen get tired of hearing things from me, and seeing their peers in the classroom gives them a fresh perspective and added energy.”
Following a strong first year, the PALs class voted to continue the initiative, and will work with each ninth grade student this year. With its positive impact on school culture and student connection, Freshman Connection is expected to remain a valued tradition at Wayland Union High School.
