WUS Inducts New Members into Alumni Hall of Fame

Wayland Union Schools inducted new members into the Wayland Union Schools Alumni Hall of Fame on April 18, 2023. New inductees included Jennifer Moushegian, Vickie Schwartz, and Donald Shafer. Shafer was inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame posthumously.

Jennifer Moushegian graduated from Wayland Union High School in 1989. From there she attended the University of Michigan where she graduated from the School of Education in 1994. Moushegian later went on to attend Western Michigan University to earn her Master's in Athletic Administration. Moushegian's educational background started at Otsego Public School where she was a teacher, then Assistant Principal at the Middle School, and a Middle School Girls Basketball and Volleyball Coach from 1995 to 2002. She became the Assistant Principal for WUMS in 2003 and later became the Principal for Pine Street Elementary from 2008 to 2019. She has served Wayland Union Schools in many capacities over the years, we thank Jennifer Moushegian for her years of dedication to this district.

Vicki Schwartz graduated from Wayland Union Schools in 1971. She later went on to receive her bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Business from Western Michigan University in 1981. Schwarz was an Adult Education Teacher for many years, while also serving as the JV Volleyball Head coach in the 1980s and 90s. Schwartz led very successful Volleyball and Softball programs with the assistance of Coach Anguilum and Coach Sharon. The community will recognize Vicki from Wayland Hardware and Rental Center, which she has owned since 1992. Vicki Schwartz has contributed to many school programs by advertising and touching the lives of many over the years as a coach, teacher, and employer.

Donald Shafer was a proud Wayland Union Alumni. After completing school, he went on to join the Army from 1941 to 1945. After serving in World War II, Donald along with a few local servicemen, formed and built the VFW located on South Main St. In 1946, Mr. Shafer was also a member of the committee to start the first little league program in Wayland. In 1947, Shafer was married and went on to have 5 children, all of whom also graduated from Wayland Union Schools. He was a local builder most of his life, but served on the City Council from 1967 to 1977 and was the elected mayor from 1977 to 1985. Shafer volunteered in many programs throughout the community, making a lasting positive impact on Wayland.
