WUS Inducts New Members into the Alumni Hall of Fame

Wayland Union High School proudly welcomed four new members into its Alumni Hall of Fame during a ceremony held on April 21st, 2026. The 2026 inductees, Dr. Pete Moore, Joyce (Bezemek) Leach, Lillian DeKoning, and Joseph Harnish, were recognized for their professional achievements and lasting contributions to their communities.

Dr. Pete MooreDr. Pete Moore, a 1984 graduate, pursued an extensive academic career, earning degrees from Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State University, including a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. His research career included the publication of 48 peer-reviewed papers and four patents related to Alzheimer’s treatment and tissue engineering. Transitioning to dentistry, Dr. Moore practiced for more than two decades while dedicating significant time to humanitarian efforts. He completed 28 service trips to Niger, helped establish three healthcare clinics in sub-Saharan Africa, and contributed to Mission of Mercy initiatives providing free dental care. He also delivered mobile dental services to facility-bound senior citizens across Oklahoma.

Joyce LeachJoyce (Bezemek) Leach, a member of the Class of 1970, earned degrees from Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University in Child Development and Counseling. She began her teaching career in 1975 and joined Wayland Union Schools in 1977, where she served students across multiple elementary buildings for 35 years. Her career included three years teaching internationally at the Yokohama International School in Japan. Beyond the classroom, Leach was a leader among her peers by serving on committees, mentoring educators, advancing classroom technology, supporting her teachers’ union, and volunteering her counseling expertise within the community.

Lillian DeKoningLillian DeKoning, a 2004 graduate, demonstrated leadership early as Senior Class President and through her involvement in student organizations and athletics. She continued her education at Western Michigan University, Davenport University, and Central Michigan University. After returning to Wayland, she became deeply engaged in local service, contributing to organizations such as the Wayland Main Street program, the Wayland Chamber of Commerce, the Wayland Union Education Foundation, and the Wayland Township Board.

Joseph HarnishJoseph Harnish, a 1997 graduate, built a strong foundation in leadership through athletics and extracurricular involvement, including Business Professionals of America. He attended Saginaw Valley State University and later Grand Valley State University. Harnish has remained actively involved in the community for decades, supporting organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, Wayland Youth Athletics, FIRST Tech Challenge robotics, the high school FIRST Robotics team, and the Then and Now Library in Dorr.

Each of this year’s inductees exemplifies a shared commitment to service, leadership, and community engagement. Their collective impact reflects the values of Wayland Union Schools and highlights the enduring strength of the Wayland community.
