Michigan Seal of Biliteracy
The Michigan Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who have demonstrated proficiency in English and at least one additional world language. Awarded to graduates who achieve “Intermediate High Proficiency” on approved language assessments, the seal celebrates the value of multilingualism, cultural understanding, and communication skills that prepare students for future success.
Wayland Union Schools proudly congratulates seniors Isaias Lozada-Reyes and Serlin Vasquez for earning the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy this year.
Isaias Lozada-Reyes attended Wayland Union Schools for the past two years. Although his time at Wayland was brief, he quickly built strong friendships and enjoyed his academic experience. Growing up in a Spanish-speaking home while attending English-speaking schools presented challenges, but Isaias is proud of his bilingual journey and the ability to communicate fluently in two languages. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career as an electrician, where he hopes to use his biliteracy skills to serve and connect with others in his community.

Serlin Vasquez joined Wayland Union Schools in sixth grade and immediately felt welcomed by the Wildcat community. While growing up bilingual came with challenges, Serlin is grateful for the teachers and staff who supported him throughout his educational journey. He plans to attend Grand Rapids Community College and Ferris State University to study Construction Management and Architecture while continuing to work at Scholtens Farms. Serlin believes being bilingual opens doors to new opportunities and allows him to connect people and cultures in meaningful ways.
Congratulations to Isaias and Serlin on this outstanding achievement.
