WUS Awarded Grant to Launch Innovative MEERA Program at the Middle School
Wayland Union Schools is proud to announce the launch of the Manufacturing and Engineering Education Reimagined for All (MEERA) program at our middle school for next school year, made possible through a $356,500 grant awarded under Section 61v by the Michigan Department of Education.
We are among 56 school districts across the state selected to receive this competitive funding, which supports the expansion of high-quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Michigan is also the first state in the nation to provide funding specifically for the development of MEERA labs, positioning districts like ourselves at the forefront of innovative, career-focused education.
The MEERA program is designed to introduce middle school students to a wide range of manufacturing and engineering disciplines, including additive manufacturing, automation and robotics, CNC machining, electronics, non-destructive testing, welding and fabrication, and manufacturing engineering. The program also emphasizes workplace readiness and explores the “future of work,” helping students make meaningful connections between classroom learning and real-world careers.
Through hands-on experiences, students will engage with industry-relevant tools and technologies while gaining exposure to local educational and career opportunities in high-demand fields.
“Middle school is a critical time for students to explore their interests and begin thinking about their future,” said Rachel Cimek, Middle School Principal. “The MEERA program is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and deepen students’ understanding of manufacturing and engineering pathways in an engaging and meaningful way.”
“We’re incredibly excited to implement the MEERA program utilizing 61v grant funding as it allows us to start exposing students to meaningful career pathways earlier,” stated Teresa Fulk, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services. “This work connects directly to the enhancements coming to our high school CTE spaces through the bond, helping us create a more intentional and seamless experience for students. By building early awareness and hands-on opportunities, we’re not only preparing students to take full advantage of what’s ahead at Wayland Union High School, but also setting them up for opportunities provided through the Allegan Area ESA Tech Center and beyond as they prepare for life after graduation.”
Wayland Union Schools is committed to preparing all students for success by expanding access to innovative programs that connect learning to real-world opportunities.
